Are you prepared for the new ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation?

What are the ‘Simpler Recycling’ regulations?

In March 2025, the "Simpler Recycling" legislation will come into effect in the UK.

All businesses with more than 10 employees, schools, hospitals and other non-household premises will be required to separate dry recycling from general waste to simplify what can be recycled across different councils in England.

The legislation aims to save resources from going to waste, support the circular economy and enhance sustainability. Businesses will need clear signage indicating what materials can be recycled in each waste stream.

Failure to meet these requirements can result in significant fines, with environmental officers conducting routine compliance checks to ensure businesses are adhering to the new regulations.

What waste needs to be separated?
The following materials should be separated for collection and collected separately:

  • Glass: Any type of glass bottles or jars.
  • Metal: Aluminium cans and tin cans.
  • Plastic: Bottles and containers (excluding plastic film).
  • Paper and Cardboard: Includes all paper types and cardboard packaging.
  • Food Waste: Proper disposal methods for food waste to minimise landfill contributions.

How to prepare.
To meet the new recycling standards, businesses should consider implementing multi-stream recycling systems that simplify waste segregation at the source. Providing designated bins and clear labelling can significantly reduce contamination and make sorting easier.

Signage:
Our signage can be placed on the front of bins to make it easy to identify the correct one for each type of material. If needed, signs can also be fixed on walls.

Material options:
  • Self-Adhesive Vinyl (SAV)
  • 1.2mm Polypropylene
Size options:
  • 150 x 200mm
  • 200 x 300mm

Aisle Sacks: Our industrial-grade aisle sacks are a simple way to sort waste in a warehouse. We have seven different options that are designed to be attached to the end of racking aisles with stainless steel hooks. This is an easy way to prevent confusion about where to put various waste streams.

English/Welsh signs.
Companies based in Wales may need multi-lingual signage featuring both English and Welsh. If so, we have a range of signs available in different sizes and materials:

Material options:
  • Self-Adhesive Vinyl
  • Aluminium Composite Panel

Size options:
  • A5 (148 x 210mm)
  • A4 (210 x 297mm)
  • A3 (297 x 420mm)
